As you may recall, I am a big fan of K. Bromberg’s Driven trilogy. As a matter of fact, I chose Book 3, Crashed, as one of my top reads of 2014. So when Kindle Gal mentioned an opportunity to review Slow Burn, the story about Haddie and Becks, who Bromberg introduced in the Driven trilogy, there was NO WAY I was going to let the chance pass me by. Read on to see if it met my high expectations. First, here are the deets:

One Night. That’s all it was supposed to be.

Reeling from the sudden loss of her sister, Haddie Montgomery has sworn off relationships. All she wanted from Beckett Daniels was a sexy distraction to help her escape her pain for just a little while….There weren’t supposed to be any strings attached—so why can’t she shake the memory of that unforgettable night from her thoughts? Or the taste of his kiss from her lips?

No matter how hard Haddie tries to forget about him, Becks relentlessly tries to prove that she should start living for today. But she is determined to avoid romantic commitment, and she can always use her ex-boyfriend’s reappearance to help snuff out the slow burn within her that Becks has sparked….

Or will fate force her to realize that this kind of connection doesn’t come along very often and a chance at love is worth the risk?

Sunny‘s Review

Haddie Montgomery (City) is struggling due to the loss of her sister and the circumstances around that loss. It has had a profound impact on her and leads her to reevaluate her life. Most of Slow Burn was written from Haddie’s point of view, so the pain and fear she was enduring daily became evident. This approach helped me understand why she avoided commitment at all costs as well as why she kept secrets and tried to hold everyone at arm’s length. Overall, I found Haddie’s story captivating. It took an emotional look at serious issues that touch many peoples’ lives, as well as the impact of losing someone close to you. I loved a lot of elements of Haddie’s character. I loved her independent nature and her caring yet feisty personality. Most of all, I enjoyed her evolution from pain and fear to love. I also loved how Rylee, Haddie’s best friend, and Haddie’s family factored into her touching story.

Beckett (Becks) Daniels (Country) is the epitome of a good guy. He loves his family, is a good friend, and could be the slow and steady in a relationship. Surprisingly, he hasn’t found the right girl yet, but he has a lot to offer. He is the full package! When he gets “involved” with Haddie, who just so happens to be his best friend Colton’s wife’s best friend, things start to get interesting for Beckett! I loved how Bromberg occasionally switched to Beckett’s point of view, which gave me a glimpse into this incredible man’s head. Beckett is a rule maker and for the most part he sticks to his rules. So why is he having such a hard time sticking to Haddie’s rule of no strings? He doesn’t like to be messed with, and challenges Haddie numerous times when she attempted to do just that. I loved how he constantly called her out because he wanted to understand her issues and show his support to her as she worked through them.

I loved the emotional story of Haddie and Beckett! Having read the Driven trilogy by K. Bromberg, I already knew Haddie and Becks as best friends to Rylee and Colton. What I loved about both of them in prior stories was their determination to be the best friends possible, and that carried over into Slow Burn. From the title of the book, I was expecting a slow burning romance, and that’s exactly what I got! Just when I thought things would heat up, Bromberg would take it a different direction. It was brilliantly written! While I really enjoyed Haddie’s character, I found myself drawn to Beckett’s character the most. I loved how caring he was toward Haddie, even as he tried to figure out the mixed messages she was sending (she wanted him to help her feel and then in the next breath wanted her distance!). You could sense the involvement Becks had in their friendship as well as his desire for more. It was not surprising that the sexy time in Slow Burn was an 11 on a scale from 1–10 on the spice meter. Bromberg never disappoints in that regard! :)

I really enjoyed reading about Rylee and Colton again and getting a deep dive into the lives of Haddie and Becks in Slow Burn. Even though I enjoyed the latest in the Driven series because I had read the other books first, this could most certainly be read as a standalone and enjoyed just as much.

Bottom Line

Bromberg fans need to go out TODAY and purchase Slow Burn! If you haven’t read any of the Driven trilogy but you like spicy love stories, give this a try! This is an emotional story where friends and lovers help others through life, leading to a happily ever after.

Excerpt from Slow Burn

I am thrilled that Kindles & Wine is one of today’s stops on K. Bromberg’s Slow Burn blog tour.

Slow Burn Blog Tour

As part of the tour, we have an excerpt to share. To set this up, all you need to know is that Haddie is having a rough time with her “no strings” rule and in a weak moment finds herself calling Becks. She gets mad at herself for doing so and acts out a bit by asking him about a woman she saw him with earlier. Becks’s response to her question, and to her apparent need, demonstrates his character in a nutshell.

“Yeah. That’s one way to put it. Is there something else you called for besides trying to stick your nose in where it doesn’t belong?”

I open my mouth and then shut it, unsure how calling him because I just needed to hear his voice has devolved so quickly into this. Into me scrambling for words I can’t find to fix shit that doesn’t need fixing.

Because I don’t want this. Don’t want him.

“Well then, if you want to actually talk instead of pull this ridiculous bullshit, I’m here for you…but Had…? Whatever this is here…this passive aggressive crap? I don’t do too well with that. We had our one night. You made it quite clear you didn’t want anything more than that so you don’t get to call me up and question what I might or might not be doing with anybody else. You want no strings? Then cut the ties…but frankly I don’t think you know what the fuck you want so until you figure your shit out, I think it’s best that we say good night before we make a bad situation even worse.”

“Wait!” Desperation rings in my voice in the single word. And I hate myself for sounding like this but I’m so lonely, so scared and just want the comfort I know he can bring me right now.

I wait for the sound of the dial tone to assault my ears. Wait for the incessant beep that reaffirms why I have barbed wire wrapped around my heart – painful but necessary. But there is nothing for a few moments until I hear the phone scrape against the stubble on his face.

And I wait…my throat burning with the tears I want to shed but am so sick of. The ones that no longer bring me comfort.

“I’m here, Haddie. I’m not going anywhere, okay?” The timbre of his voice carries his concern and sympathy to me through the line.

The incoherent sound I make is all I can offer in thank you to him for not hanging up on me. For not giving up on me.
